As of 1st July 2024, the Australian Government has implemented new visa fees, affecting both student and working holiday visas.
These changes have been introduced to ensure that Australia’s education and migration systems reflect the value of its world-class education and to maintain integrity within the system.
Here’s an overview of the new visa fees and what they mean for international students:
New Visa Fees Starting July 2024:
- Student Visa: $1600 (previously $710)
- Student Visa with Dependent (over 18): $1190 (previously $530)
- Student Visa with Dependent (under 18): $390 (previously $175)
- Tourist Visa (lodged outside Australia): $195 (previously $190)
- Tourist Visa (lodged in Australia): $490 (previously $475)
- Working Holiday Visa (WHV): $650 (previously $635)
Why Have These Changes Been Introduced?
The Australian Government aims to ensure that visa fees align with the quality and value of education and migration opportunities. According to Clare O’Neil, Minister for Home Affairs, “These changes will help restore integrity to our international education system, making it more fair and sustainable.”
Key Considerations for International Students
Work Opportunities
International students in Australia can work part-time during their studies and full-time during breaks. The National Minimum Wage, as of 1st July 2024, has increased:
- Permanent employees: $24.10 per hour, or $915.90 for a 38-hour week (before tax)
- Casual employees: $30.13 per hour (with 25% casual loading)
This wage increase could help offset the rise in visa fees, making it easier for students to manage their living expenses while studying.
Educational Investment
Australia’s reputation for providing high-quality education is globally recognised. The increased visa fees reflect an investment in this quality, potentially opening doors to better opportunities for graduates.
